Fear has been a valuable resource for survival throughout the evolution of our species. When fear reaches its maximum level, the heart reacts by "revving up" and accelerating its beats to facilitate escape, in case there is a possibility of escape.
But when this possibility does not exist because fear is inherent in the mind, the heart remains constantly "high", ready to face an attack that will never happen.

Those who are constantly in the grip of anguish and anxiety, even when there is nothing to fear, tend to have an excess of adrenaline in circulation; in these cases the body often ends up declaring a state of emergency and forces us to rest, succumbing to an illness. 

In fact, our body reacts to emotional stress as if it were in the presence of a physical threat, because the autonomic nervous system, which controls the emission of adrenaline, does not distinguish between the two.

Long-standing fears, sometimes dating back to childhood, can also lead to poor breathing habits. The diaphragm in this case is essentially blocked. Years and years of incorrect breathing can lead to imbalances in the chemical composition of the blood and this is a striking example of how fear can even influence the functioning of the entire body when breathing becomes chronically superficial.

How to defend ourselves from excesses of anxiety and counteract fears? In the meantime, we need to learn to breathe well; good diaphragmatic breathing, which is natural breathing, improves your life in terms of psycho-physical-spiritual well-being. Seeing is believing! Furthermore, recent scientific research shows that the refrain of an old music hall song “put all your problems in a bag and smile, laugh and smile” is indeed valid.

Happiness is not simply a state of mind, but is also embodied in muscles and hormones, and, for this reason, putting the muscles of the face into a smiling expression can have profound effects on the nervous system.

It has been shown that the mere fact of putting a pencil in the mouth between the teeth, forcing the facial muscles into an attitude that is close to that of a smile, causes a stimulus to be produced at a hormonal level which changes our internal mood from a sulky one. to benevolent. Here too, seeing is believing!

Personally, in many years of experience in the field, I experiment with various types of attitudes and small but effective strategies that help to free oneself from fears that are often linked to events that then do not come true. For example, I invite you to write down in your diary the things that are bothering you at that moment and then to pick up those notes again after some time and see the effect it has.

However, everything must be seasoned with a healthy spirit of humor and self-irony. Among my most effective and memorable experiences I certainly include the Master's Degree in Psychology of Communication and Wellbeing at the Catholic University of Milan; it is a day in which the theme of humor is developed in its various declinations.
